NJFFS Division A Section 2
Sentinels of the Ridgetops
Section 2 relies on the keen eyes of fire observers situated in 4 firetower locations in northern New Jersey and one in Sterling Forest State Park in neighboring Orange County, New York.
Ramapo Tower, located on the Ringwood, Wanaque and Oakland borders, has a commanding view of the Wanaque watershed to the west, the entire area east of the Ramapos to the New York skyline and an unobstructed view down the I-287 corridor towards Interstate 80 & 280.
Bearfort Tower, atop the Bearfort ridge in West Milford, checks for smoke columns in the western part of Section 2 and has a terrific vantage point to peer into NY's Harriman State Park, located to the northeast. It has limited views to the northwest areas of Section 2, but can assist Section 5 to the southeast and southwest. The Clinton Reservoir area is visible to the west.
Sterling Tower (NY), on Rough Mountain in Sterling Forest State Park (Palisades Interstate Park Comm.) is in a location allowing it to view a large area of Section 2.
Milton Tower is an 80' International Derrick design on Bowling Green Mountain in Oak Ridge.
Greystone Tower at 92', is located high above Union Hill in Morris County. Milton and Greystone fill in the other pieces of the puzzle needed to confirm wildfire locations in Section 2.
The fire observers based at these towers serve as vital communications links for Section 2's mobile units, fire crews, fire suppression aircraft and the Division officers.
Budd Lake, located on Turkey Hill in Mt. Olive, Culvers located on the Kittatinny Ridge above Culvers Lake and Catfish perched on the Kittatinny Ridge near Blairstown, make up the remainder
of the "Fire Lookouts" in Division A. All of New Jersey's lookouts
are listed in the National Historic Lookout Register.
