The Windbeam fire, named for it's location
on the saddle between Little Windbeam and Windbeam Mtns., was fought on April 18-20, 2009. Although the fire's size was less
than 4 acres, it's location made it a most difficult fire to access and suppress. The 60% grade from the roadway to the ridgetop,
tested even the fittest of firefighters. Fire crews used a variety of handtools to cut fireline through rocks, heavy leaf
litter, grasses and many blowdowns. Groundfire and chimneys were a particular concern. Huey helicopter Delta 6 was utilized
extensively, scooping water from the Wanaque Reservoir and slinging it to the secluded ridgetop. Alpha 2 & 3 also made
drops during initial attack on Day 2. Photos are courtesy of Jim Lisa, Cindy Livesey and Eric Livesey.
