Local Incidents

For many years we have been taught that fire in the forest is bad. What we should have been taught is that uncontrolled fire in the forest is bad. Uncontrolled or wildfire can cause damage in the forest. But fire in the hands of skilled professionals can be a very effective natural resource management tool. Fire used in this manner is known as prescribed fire.

Camp YawPaw Fire

Mahwah

November 2002

This fire covered 61 acres in late

November, 2002. Much of those

61 acres had groundfire up to 10"

deep into the duff. Mop-up was

extremely time consuming and

difficult.
